Fraser Island

Talk to almost any visitor to Australia and Fraser Island is a destination that they will have gone to. So why not fly there yourself with some friends? Lying about 120nm north of Brisbane, flying to Fraser by light aircraft is one of the best ways to see it - particularly if you want to avoid a large package tour with 40 others.

(Right) - Unless you join a tour, you will definitely need to hire a car for at least some of your stay on the island.

Wangoolba Bay (or Eurong Beach Resort Airstrip) is on the Western side of the island and requires prior permission - call 07 4127 9122. The other main option is to fly into Hervey Bay, rent a 4WD and catch a barge across to the island.

Accomodation - Eurong Beach Resort towards the southern end of the island has accomodation to suit all tastes & budgets. Orchid Beach Resort at the northern end is generally more up-market.
Car hire - Air Fraser Island have the only 4WDs available for hire on the island (07 4125 2343)

Wangoolba Airstrip

Wangoolba is a 960m bitumen strip lying roughly 09/27. It is a 45min 4WD drive from the Eurong Beach Resort so make sure you organise someone to pick you up on arrival.

Other airstrips
The Eastern beach is 75 miles long, and serves as landing strips at several sites. However, do not be tempted as soft sand, creeks and wandering 4WDs make it difficult for anyone but a local. Neither the operator (nor most insurance coverage) allows you to land on the sand.

Lake McKenzie

Is one of Island's best-known freshwater lakes. It is a refreshing swimming spot and has good camping and picnic facilities nearby, although it is a good 45 minutes drive from Eurong Beach Resort.

Right - Lake McKenzie is the largest lake on the island

Lake Wabby (Right)

Is the deepest of the Island's lakes and is surrounded by a massive sand-blow. Lake Allom is an attractive small lake with a forest backdrop. If you are lucky, you may encounter its special inhabitants - tortoises. You can walk here from Eurong Beach Resort in about 45 minutes.

Eli Creek
Eli Creek is the largest freshwater creek along the east coast, with over four million litres of water flowing from its mouth onto the eastern beach and into the ocean every hour! The swift current makes for an invigorating and fun swim.

Champagne Pools
These beautiful rock pools filled with bubbling seawater, are excellent swimming holes at low tide and are located at Middle Rocks, just north of Indian Head.

Maheno Wreck
The Wreck of the Maheno is located just north of Happy Valley on the eastern beach. The vessel had been a well-known trans-Tasman liner and was heading for a Japanese wrecking yard when she was driven ashore during a cyclone in 1935.
