Three Hummock Island (YTHM)
In 1798 when Flinders and Bass arrived at what the former dubbed 'three-hummock land', they were staggered by the vast number of mutton birds (short-tailed shearwaters). Flinders recorded that "a large flock of gannets was observed at daylight......followed by such a number of the sooty petrels [or mutton birds] as we had never seen equalled. There was a stream of from forty to eighty yards in depth, and of three hundred yards or more in breadth; the birds were not scattered, but flying as compactly as a free movement of their wings seemed to allow..."
The Hunter Group of islands,
of which Three
Hummock Island is part, is renowned for its
bird, animal and marine life and is a thriving
commercial black salmon and abalone
fishing area.
Declared a Nature Reserve
in 1978, there
are meleleuca forests, eucalyptus stands,
heath and grassland. Wild flowers can be
enjoyed all year round: pig face, wild
boronia, pink heath, squarosa, clematis,
coastal wattle, prickly mimosa, wild
geraniums and manuka.
