The museum also has the world's only 'genuine' flying CAC-12 Boomerang fighter.
This aircraft was designed, built and flown in about 3 months after the
Japanese attacked Pearl Harbour when Australia realised it didn't have any
frontline fighter aircraft. (Wirraways were all we had) It was designed
around the 1200hp P&W R-1820 engine which was being built for DC-3s
and used many components from the Wirraway. In tests against other allied
aircraft it outclimbed Kittyhawks and outturned Spitfires but never got
the chance to fight a Japanese Zero for which it was designed.
