Q: Where do I start?

A: Trial Instructional Flight

What better way to learn more about flying than to experience it! Here at Lilydale we offer a Trial Instructional Flight (TIF). This includes a brief with one of the instructors, and a 20-30 minute flight during which you will handle the controls and experience the sensation of flying!

(Above) Checking the oil is one of the most important pre-flight checks

A TIF is the ONLY WAY to find out whether you would like to learn to fly. Call us for an obligation-free introduction to flying for just $75 (inc GST). Alternatively, if you are in a hurry then you can jump straight into your first lesson, including a 30 minute briefing, a 15 minute pre-flight inspection, 40 minutes flying under instruction and a 15 minute debrief - all for a special rate of just $140 (ing GST).

Student Pilot's License

Whatever your goal may be, you must obtain a Student Pilot's License to enable you to begin flight training. To obtain this license you must first pass a medial examination by an APPROVED medical practitioner, and complete the license applications form. For the issue of the CASA student licence you will be required to pay $27.50 (inc GST).

Theory and Examinations

Theoretical knowledge is integrated into all phases of flight training. In undertaking study in accordance with the requirements of CASA, a student may either proceed independently and study at home or attend regular theory classes conducted here at Lilydale Flying School. At any stage Lilydale's instructors will assist you with any problems you may have. Exams for the BAK and PPL cost $55.00 (inc GST) plus a small supervision fee.

Pre-Solo

At commencement of your flight training, your instructor will take you through the training sequences which will lead to your first solo flight, a thrilling experience not many pilots forget!

This normally requires 10-15 hours of dual flying including: (1) Start-up, taxiing and shut-down; (2) Effects of the flight controls; (3) Straight and level flight; (4) Climbing and descending; (5) Turning; (6) Stall recoveries; and (7) Taking off, circuit flying and landings.

At commencement of your flight training, your instructor will take you through the training sequences which will lead to your first solo flight, a thrilling experience not many pilots forget! There is a short Q&A sheet you need to complete but don't panic, we'll guide you as to the material you need to study!

General Flying Progress Test

After the student has gone solo in the Training Area, flight instruction continues with advanced flying skills. These include: (1) Steep turns; (2) Stalling Revision; (3) Short-field take-offs and landings; (4) Cross-wind takeoffs and landings; (5) Instrument flying; and (6) Unusual attitudes.

The General Flying Progress Test enables the pilot to carry passengers, by day only, within the boundaries of the Training Area. This normally requires 25-30 hours total flying. (Including Pre-Solo flying).

The theoretical requirement for this license is a multiple choice exam called Basic Aeronautical Knowledge (BAK), which incorporates aspects such as aerodynamics, engines and aircraft performance.

Private Pilot's License

To have the restrictions removed from your license to navigate freely around the country is one of the most satisfying aspects of flight training. The holder of a PPL is permitted to fly with passengers, by day only, anywhere in Australia, Papua New Guinea, East Timor or any other country that recognises Australian standards.

To obtain a PPL, the candidate must undergo a series of navigation exercises, which usually comprises flights over most of Victoria, both with an instructor, and then by yourself. This normally requires 25-30 hours of cross-country flying. A multiple choice theory exam set by CASA covering the areas of Meteorology, Navigation, Flight Rules & Procedures, must also be passed.
