Advanced Flight Training

Commercial Pilot's Licence

If you are serious about a career in aviation, then you will need a CPL which allows you to gain employmen taking paying passengers. It usually involves some dual training and a theory exam. You may only take this flying test with a minimum of 150 total flying hours.

At Lilydale we offer you the opportunity to train for the CPL in either the Piper Archer III or the more economical Victa Airtourer.

Night Rating

For the added freedom and flexibility of being able to fly at night, a night rating is considered essential. It requires circuits and night navigation exercises, and is often conducted as part of fulfilling the minimum requirements for a CPL. A typical night rating takes 10-15 hours, costing around $2,000.

Command & Private Instrument Rating
An instrument rating gives you the freedom to fly in all weather and removes a lot of the worry in planning lengthy trips with passengers. Lilydale offers you the choice to train for either the Command or Private Instrument Ratings, in single or multi-engine aircraft. A CASA theory exam is required for both ratings, costing
$125.00.
Get GPS Approved!
Lilydale now offers GPS en-route & Non-Precision Approach (NPA) training in our Archer III. Take advantage of the 100's of NPA approaches being approved around Australia and train at Lilydale Airport's very own NPA!
Multi-engine Rating
Most charter and airline flying is conducted in multi-engine aircraft. At Lilydale we use Beechcraft Travelairs (type rating covers Beechcraft Barons) for twin training, although they are also ideal for touring with 4-5 passengers.

Travelairs are well regarded by overseas flying schools and charter operators as they prepare a student well for flying Barons or Cessna 310s which are a common charter aircraft in Australia. Lilydale is fortunate to have two available for training. A typical twin-endorsement takes 7 hours, costing around $2,450.

Overseas Licence Conversions

Lilydale specially caters for overseas visitors who already have a pilot's licence and wish to fly in Australia.

CASA will usually issue visitors holding a recognised ICAO licence with a "Certificate of Validation", permitting them to fly by Day VFR for a maximum of three months. Permits for Night VFR and Instrument Ratings are also available.

The application turnaround takes between one to three days, in which time our instructors are happy to help the visitor with the Australian documents/maps required and the differences in our airspace procedures. You will then need to complete a check/familiarisation flight.
