Discover Lake Mungo NP and White Cliffs

Fly with us to two of Australia’s most interesting inland landscapes – the spectacular ancient sands of Lake Mungo and the opal mining ‘village’ of White Cliffs.

Our tour starts in a comfortable twin-engine aircraft which leaves Lilydale at 1000 for the direct 2hr flight to Mungo Wilderness Lodge adjacent to Lake Mungo National Park, near Balranald, NSW.

We will be met by our friendly tour guide who will arrange a delicious BBQ lunch before taking us on a 4hr afternoon guided tour of the park. This will include lots of stops at photogenic locations including the famous ‘Walls of China’.

The Lake Mungo system dried up about 14,000 years ago but erosion is now unearthing many extinct animal remains including Tasmanian tigers, giant kangaroos and the strange “zygomaturus” – half wombat, half hippo.

Carbon dating of human remains has proven that Aborigines have been living in the area for at least 40,000 years. We can even tell that they fished the lake for perch, whilst flake tools and sandstone grinders indicate that they ground wild grass seeds into flour.

A two-course meal will be provided on Friday night before we settle into comfortable bungalow-style accommodation.

After a leisurely breakfast on Saturday, we will depart mid-morning for White Cliffs. This ‘mini Coober Pedy’ provides a glimpse of a special breed of outback folk – the opal miners.

Colourful local character, Bruce Johns will meet us and drive us into ‘town’ for a quick café lunch before heading to the unique ‘Underground Motel’ – another highlight in itself! This hotel has been constructed entirely underground out of old opal workings and now complete with carpet, modern ventilation, skylights and all mod-cons.

On Sunday Bruce will show you this unique town – solar power station, galleries, underground houses, opal mines and of course, the chance to buy opals “direct from the digger!”
